Simhadri was one of the biggest blockbusters of Telugu cinema. It was one of those rare movies where everyone-the producers, the director, the distributors and even the theatre owners benefitted. The lead actor NTR reached such a high and miracles were expected out of him after that.
The story (as we all remember): A village simpleton goes to Kerala to reunite his master's daughter with her family, falls in love with the daughter's daughter and fights Kerala's Don thereby saving the entire population. Taking a cue from Rajamouli, director Puri Jagannath also made NTR save Mumbai from their don in Andhrawala. But that didn't work out properly and the movie failed. Now Rajamouli has repeated this theme again, and trust this director to copy himself with style. Read on.
Plot The movie opens with a revelation that inspector Vikram Singh Rathod is not dead and a villainous looking 'Bavji' digs up his grave to find it full of stones. The movie then shifts to Vikram's look-alike (or is it the same man?) Satti Babu, a petty conman who lives off cheating people along with his assistant (Brahmanandam). He falls in mutual love with a north Indian girl called Neeraja (Anushka) and tells her honestly that he is a thief, promising her that he will not commit thefts anymore.
In a railway station, he spots a woman wearing loads of gold and manages to steal her trunk, thinking it might have more gold in it-he does it as one last con job to survive the rest of his life. To their horror, they discover a little girl in that trunk and because of a suspicious police officer, he has to take care of that girl. He doesn't like kids, but he eventually ends up forming a bond with the child, who insists on calling him 'nanna'. Seeing this, Neeraja suspects him to have had a previous relationship and leaves him. People set out to kill him, and he doesn't know who they are.
Finally, the truth comes out-Vikram Singh Rathod, his posting in a dacoit infested area in MP where he kills the Don Bavji's son and almost rids the area of their fear-but Bavji's younger brother Titla survives 'killing' Rathod. Did Rathod really die? And who will end the reign of the dacoits there? That forms the rest of the story.
Story, Screenplay & Direction: This is the longest synopsis till date. And the movie feels really long, it isn't. It moves fast, one thing after another happening to lead to the final predictable end. The end is predictable, we all know what happens and we guess it a couple of minutes after the interval (those of us who've passed third standard), but Rajamouli's typical narration makes it watchable, even interesting. Even when we know what's coming next and how the hero is going to outsmart the villain, it is fun to watch Raviteja perform the role tailor made for him.
Look at the story: Simple, petty thief Satti Babu saves an entire valley from the clutches of a dreaded dacoit gang in some other land. Sounds familiar? Well, it's almost like watching Simhadri revamped. Not only that, remember the 'Cheema' thread that ran for almost half an hour in Simhadri with Ankita? Well, Anushka's navel gets 20 minutes of screen time in Vikramarkudu-but hey, you see no one is complaining. The choice of actors, and the little things that Rajamouli adds makes the movie stand out from the 100 other recently released villain bashing-demigod hero flicks.
Rajamouli's villains are all such dreadful characters, sinking to such evil acts that are disturbing. After 'Bhai Saab' in Simhadri and 'Bhikshu Yadav' in Sye, we have one more atrocious character who will not be forgotten that fast-Titla. He burns a man's house with his wife and kids locked inside it, and the whole village is so scared that no one helps them. Bavji's son harasses women in the village, and the way it is shown is gory.
The comedy track is sometimes good fun, sometimes embarrassingly scummy-especially those involving Anushka's navel. The romance between the lead pair is a little silly, and not very convincing. The sentimental bonding that Satti Babu has with the little girl is sweet, and the scene where they actually bond after he breaks her precious cassette with her mother's voice is emotional without being melodramatic. One really good dialogue is when Vikram's senior officer, Prakash Raj, tells him that a man needs fear to live and he replies to that.
The art direction (R. Ravinder) is very good and the audiences are transported to Chambal valley whenever Vikram goes there. The editing is slick and thankfully not jerky.
Performances Raviteja is back with a bang, and it is his best after Idiot. He has a really good screen presence, and one does not get bored watching him, even when he hams sometimes, it is forgiven. His flair for comedy is such that only he can do it-he is the most original actor we have. Whether you like him or hate him, one cannot ignore him. After directing Prabhas in Chatrapati, Rajamouli must have been delighted with the completely opposite Raviteja who is much older and energetic, and has 12 expressions a minute.
Anushka hardly has anything to do, but she manages. Titla (Ajay) rocks, he shows how versatile he is as an actor. Bavji (Vineeth Kumar) overacts a bit. Brahmanandam, Prakashraj and all the other supporting actors have very little to do, but they are aces when it comes to roles like these, they do this movie after movie; Prakashraj gets a lot of practice playing a cop and Brahmanandam playing a sidekick to the lead. Rajeev Kanakala is a good actor and another Rajamouli favorite. He shines too, along with Rajamouli's blue-eyed boy, Titla (Ajay).
The Music And The Moves Not one of MM Keeravani's great scores, first class but not distinction. But Raviteja is energetic and has his unique style (much needed for a Telugu film hero) and we forget about the music after sometime. Anushka dances well; basically for this movie, the music won't elevate the movie, it has to be the other way round. After 'Nuvvu Whistlesthe' in Simhadri (here we go again), we have 'Dammare Damma' in Vikramarkudu-similar setting (two girls and one man), similar steps and almost synonymous lyrics.
And the verdict is.. This is a general announcement: In the recently released Veerabhadra, Bangaram, the highly successful Pokiri and now Vikramarkudu, the heroes slay about 100 men each. Kudos to all of them-and that too without too many scratches on themselves. Oh well, welcome to the land of Telugu cinema.
This is a typical Rajamouli movie. And if you've enjoyed Simhadri and Sye (in that order), this movie will strike the right chord with you. One thing is that Vikramarkudu never bores you. It will keep you glued to the screen, because so many things happen all the time and the narrative moves quickly. There is loads of violence, a little bit of romance, a bowlful of sentiment and ample heroism, not to forget the most evil villains. A treat for Raviteja and Rajamouli fans.

What's it about

A happy family, with a husband, wife and kids, invite a stranger to their home and in no time, they get close. However, things begin to take a serious turn soon. There is a lot of tension, sadness and death, later. Why all this happens forms the essence.

Raj and Pooja (Indrajith and Manjula) is one happy couple totally in love with each other and they have two lovely kids too. The family moves into their new home and start living happily and things change when one of the kids is saved from an accident by Kavya (Charmee). Pooja is thankful to Kavya and since they need a nanny, Pooja asks Kavya to stay over. Soon, both of them become close friends and Kavya gets close to the kids too. Meanwhile, Abhi (shashank), Raj’s brother who falls in love with Kavya at first sight and though she turns him down he does not give up. Finally, Kavya agrees but then the story takes a turn when Abhi gets killed in a hit and run accident. Since then, problems begin for Pooja and Raj leading to frustration and more pain. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Performances

Indrajith has given a neat performance while Manjula could have been better in the intense scenes. Shashank’s role was quite brief and there is not much scope for performance but he has done justice to the role. Satyam Rajesh comes up with some good comedy. The scene stealer, of course, is Charmee who has come up with a gripping performance once again and she looked quite sensuous too. The director has come up with a plot that could have given some shock points to the viewers but then his narrative is not that strong. He should have focused on providing some more twists before revealing the entire plot. The dialogues are okay, the script was alright, the screenplay was apt, and the songs were well taken with good music. But the background score proved to be a hindrance at few places. Cinematography was top notch. Editing could have been better. The costumes and the art department did a neat job.

Bottom-line

The film seems to be inspired by Hollywood flick, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (1992). Enough excitement could have been generated by increasing the pace of the film. The technical aspects of the film have been high and the quality of presentation is good but the content part is weak and not conceived with the right punch.

Vaana-review
Starring: Vinay, Meera Chopra, Jayasudha, Suman ,Naresh ,Seetha
Director: MS Raju
Music: Kamalakar
Producer: MS Raju

Ms Raju, who is now termed as Maha Sankranthi Raju , has done a good job ,both in the direction and the production department and has given a neat movie to his audience. Though the movie gist has some outdated look, but still will find a way to the success.
Story:

Vinay is the only son of rich parents Jayasudha and Naresh. Vinay’s only aim in the life is enjoy the comforts and luxury provided by his businessman father, Naresh.

One day he incidentally comes across a beautiful girl Meera Chopra at a shopping Mall. Drooling over her gorgeous beauty, vinay accidently falls into a man hole, and is rescued by Meera . Meanwhile in the whole confusion the heroine (meera) forgets her newly purchased watch.

When rescued by the heroine, the hero whose face is already covered with Drainage water could not leave a heroic mark in the heart of the heroine.

One day Vinay tries to get in touch with the heroine through a radio program but it goes in vain.

Incidentally, Vinay comes across the heroine, while he and his mother are in a way to a marriage, but unfortunately the heroine does not recognize the hero as his face is covered with engine oil.

Vinay and his mother, jayasudha reach Suman’s house and there vinay come s to know that Meera is the daughter of Suman , a retired army colonel and Seetha.

Unfortunately, vinay also learns that meera’s marriage is already fixed and will be performed in a fort night. But still the hero succeeds in making the heroine fall in love with him. Meera , with neck deep in love with the hero suggests to elope ,with two days to go for the marriage.

At this stage, meera‘s mother Seetha learns that her daughter is about to elope with her lover and pleads the hero, vinay to make her daughter not to take such a haste decision.

Vinay ‘s mother Jayasudha also comes to know the truth that her son is the lover of meera and stops him from doing so .

Meanwhile heroine Meera is very much worried about her love as the marriage date is fast approaching, and in the climax with only 5 hours left for the marriage hero take a decision?

What is the decision and what is the end of the movie Vaana , must be watched on the big screen.
Performance

Newcomer Vinay has a good physique and has tried his best to be apt as perfect lover in this film. His looks is little macho, but still can be a perfect face as a young lover boy.

Meera Chopra is gorgeous in the costumes and with her looks. She is portrayed as a goergeous beauty in this film and especially looks sexy in a red hot costume in the song Vunnatta Leenatta . Her looks are a replica of Simran and also her bosom and waist make every male fan of her, drool for. Her bubbly action makes us to think that she is exactly a carbon copy of Genelia, in acting of course.

Suman, as a retired army officer has done a good job. He suits the character with perfect ness and ease. Jayasudha has given a 100% performance in the film.

Music of the film and the cinematography is applaudable. The natural locales around Banglore and the rain scenes have been shot perfectly.

Comedy track with Dharamavarapu and Ms Narayana are up to average.

Prabhu Deva and Sunil appear in the first song and also manage to do some dance steps.

Ms Raju as usual, appears in one of the sequences like a farmer driving a Tractor, loaded with Hay.

The hero is accompanied with a white rabbit name Devadas and is like a supporting artist to the hero character.

The film is a carbon copy of Kannda super hit Munguru Malle.

Ms Raju has added some Telugu flavor to the film and has carved it well.

On the whole this film looks same as ordinary as most of the films with a love story subject has been in the recent past.

tell a friend

Story

rajababuGopanna (Nagarjuna) is a happy-go-lucky guy and marries his childhood love Kamala (Sneha). He secures the job of Tahasildar for Husnabad on the recommendation of his maternal uncles Akkanna and Madanna. He gets inspired by the devotion shown by Dammakka towards Lord Rama and the way she protects the idols of Rama, Seeta and Lakshmana. He becomes a great devotee of Lord Rama over night. He vows that he would stay in open place just like statue of Lord Rama till a temple is constructed. He collects 6 lakhs of coins through donations and constructs Rama temple in Bhadrachalam with the guidance of his guru Kabir Das (ANR). A few ill-minded people misinform emperor Taanisha (Nasseer) that Gopanna misused emperor’s money to construct temple. Meanwhile, Kabir Das confers Gopanna the title of Sri Ramadasu on the insistence of Lord Rama. The rest of the story is all about how Tanisha realizes his mistake and sets Sri Ramadasu free.

Artists Performance

rajababuNagarjuna: Nagarjuna is perhaps the most luckiest hero among his contemporaries for getting such roles like Annamayya and Sri Ramadasu. He did extremely well in the title role. His histrionics in the last reel where ‘Dasaradhi’ song comes are extraordinary. Nobody knows how Sri Ramadasu looks like and whenever we think about Sri Ramadasu in the future, the image of Nagarjuna becomes the visual aid.

rajababuOthers: ANR acted in the vital role of Kabir Das. He brought believability to this character that is considered as guru to Ramadasu. Sneha is fabulous as devoted wife of Ramadasu. Sujatha donned one of the most important roles in this film as Dammakka. She injects devotion into the soul of Gopanna with her deeds. Suman is good as Lord Rama. Nasseer is appropriate in the role of Tanisha. Veda is fair as Seeta. Nagababu is pretty good in the role of Ravana. Among the comedians Sunil and Brahmanandam are impressive.

Technical Departments:

rajababuScreenplay - Direction: K Raghavendra Rao has the uncanny ability of striking back whenever everybody writes him off. K Raghavendra Rao proved again why he is called a legendry commercial director with this film. He narrated the entire film in a simple way by giving more importance to the emotions than the grandeur. He made sure that the emotions graph goes up as the film progresses by capturing the attention of audiences. He used pretty good commercial elements in the last half an hour of the film. The thread of parrot is nicely woven into the story.

rajababuMusic: Songs and rerecording by MM Keeravani is the biggest asset of Sri Ramadasu. We have 19 songs in this film and all songs are neatly blended into the storyline. Backgrund music is terrific. Keeravani’s background music for Sri Ramadasu is another fine example for how good music increases the emotional depth of the film. The last three songs (Yento Ruchira, Ishvakulaku and Dasarathi) take the film into different level.

rajababuOther departments: Cinematography by S Gopal Reddy is very good. Script by JK Bharavi is a plus point. The dialogues are very meaningful and appropriate. Especially the one - ‘Sreeramudiki nuvvu gudi kattinchavu. Ninnu Sreeramudu gundello vunchukunnadu’. The powerful dialogues written for Nagarjuna in Tanisha court in second half got great response. Editing by Srikar Prasad is fine. Artwork by Bhaskara Raju is good. Producer Konda Krisham Raju should be appreciated for coming forward to make such a different film.

rajababuAnalysis: The first half of the film is decent. The emotional graph starts growing up from ‘Antha Ramamayam’ song and goes to the peak by the film reaches climax. Second half of the film is very good. The plus points of this film are Nagarjuna’s histrionics, Keeravani’s music, K Raghavendra Rao’s direction of JK Bharavi’s script. Sri Ramadasu film comes as fresh breeze when we are bombarded with routine and formula flicks. I recommend this devotional flick to everybody.
